In the summer of 1996, the late Dr. Sam Awe convened a meeting of some Yoruba men in Milwaukee when he heard about two Yoruba friends who took each other to court over some disagreement. Dr. Awe thought that it would be better if a forum existed within the community to deal with such disagreements internally. The men who attended the first meeting agreed with Dr. Awe’s vision and decided to continue to meet monthly. Eventually, a consensus of opinion was reached to form an organization to actualize the vision going forward. In early 1997, a Constitution committee was formed to draft the Constitution and Rules & Regulations for the new organization. Dr. Awe was elected to a two-year term as the first president and Odua Association was registered as a 501(c)(4) Social Organization. In December 1997, Odua Association marked its first anniversary with an end of year celebration at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Ajibola. The celebration showcased the talents of our children through musical instruments, singing, poetry, etc. We also started the ongoing tradition to present holiday gifts to all the women and children of the association. Over the years, Odua Association has celebrated many blessings with our members for high school and college graduations, weddings, childbirth, etc. We have also provided financial support to members for bereavement, healthcare, etc. In addition, we support our members’ businesses and also encourage self-development through participation in ventures such as Odua Investment Club and Odua Coop.
We envision a thriving, prominent and culturally connected Yoruba community in the United States of America.
Our mission is to increase the access and integration of its members into the Greater Milwaukee community. To promote the understanding of the proud, rich and diverse heritage of the Yoruba people and seek the preservation of the Yoruba culture, traditions and values amongst its members.
Odua association is an association of rules and due process. To this end we have a constitution that guides the interactions of members between themselves and with the outside world. Our constitution is continuously reviewed to make it fit for purpose and relevant. Attached is the current constitution presented to members upon their joining.
Here is the documentation for our constitution.
